Stowe Gardens in Buckinghamshire is the location for this most amazing engagement shoot. An overcast August day greeted us at 11am, where did our summer go? I demand to know! Lets hold out for an Indian summer of sorts. For those that haven’t been Stowe Gardens are part of Stowe School, a rather incredible building worthy of exploration itself. Apparently built in 1676 it has a whole host of notable alumni, the most widely known being Sir Richard Branson and David Niven. Lord Cobham designed the gardens to reflect his politics and beliefs and the three paths vice, virtue and liberty lead you on different tours around the grounds. Be careful of the marauding sheep at the top of the hill though, I could see they had revenge in their eyes, who knows what they’re plotting up there. Light and shade is the key, under twisted branches light seeps through emerald leaves and creates the most glorious canopies of colour. For the tech heads out there the Sam Hurd technique of lens hacking was used to create the swirly bokeh effect, lenses used were 28mm and 50mm. Lomo have successfully launched the petzval lens if you’re interested in going next level swirly.
Having a connection with a place in your life is amazing, Stowe will forever be etched in hearts as the place they were engaged, and that is special, every time its re-visited it will never look the same, but the emotional tie is unbreakable. That truly is one of the most amazing parts about photographing people, you become part of an experience. Anything and everything can happen on a wedding day, you learn to expect the unexpected. Engagement sessions tend to have fewer as you’re in complete control of the location, the settings, time of day etc. Every now and again something will come from nowhere to surprise you. Check out the rest of the post and you’ll see, sometimes it doesn’t matter whats going on around you, sometimes you see a tree and you just have to climb it.
