If you’ve spent any considerable time in the south west london, chances are quite high you would have ambled through hampstead heath on a sunny afternoon. If you’ve found yourself gazing up the hill, wondering what on earth the building is at the top, well here’s the answer, the most magnificent 17th century mansion, better yet, if you’re planning to get married there, then by golly you’re in luck, you can get married there too! If the grounds of the heath weren’t enough, a stones throw away is the hill gardens and pergola which is also stunning if you fancy a look at the gallery, you can get married there too to expand your venue search.

The story goes that a house was built on the plot in the 17th century and then changed hands a few times over the years, interestingly enough there is a record of it being sold for £3,400 in 1690! According to the national trusts calculator, that equates to about £400,000 in today’s money, which of course doesn’t tell us the whole picture. With huge gulfs in wealth (by my calculations a brick layer wouldn’t make that much money in a lifetime for example) it’s fair to say that these folks were mega wealthy. Over the years it’s been modified by it’s various owners, a full history of this can be found on the Kenwood House website which is an interesting read. What is very cool about the archives is that it also preserves the evolution of the English language, the house being written as Caenwood House in letters exchanged between family members.

And so, to the wedding. If traditional country mansion is your wedding venue style of choice, then this place has to be high on the list of considerations. It is truly stunning. If you’re looking for a venue with wow factor, then this is it. In late spring and early summer the garden is ablaze with colour rhododendrons, roses, hydrangeas all line the garden edges and set the place alight. It truly is a stunning spectacle. Drinks on the lawn overlooking the heath, mingle in the west wing or dine in the old kitchen or (if you have a much bigger wedding) enjoy the wedding breakfast in a marquee on the lawn. Endless options to customise your day, with stunning architecture and grounds that roll for miles, Kenwood House is a remarkable place to host your wedding.
